Haydn’s 68 string quartets were instrumental to the evolution of the genre. Even his final quartet reveals his skillfully inventive style and subtle experimentation. Shostakovich, meanwhile, revisited classical forms in his Quintet, adding his deeply personal style and burning emotional intensity.
