Kama La Mackerel (they/them) is an award-winning Mauritian-Canadian multidisciplinary artist, educator, writer, curator and literary translator who lives in Montreal and has exhibited, performed and lectured internationally. Their new creation at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Le Morne: sekinn ekrir pa efase, will feature ritual, chant, poetry and movement. Le Morne, a mountain in Mauritius, was a refuge for runaway slaves in the 19th century. After slavery was abolished in 1835, British soldiers were dispatched to inform the maroons that they were free, but believing they were going to be arrested and re-enslaved, they climbed to the summit and leapt to their death. La Mackerel will breathe life into the figure of the slave and the mountain, now recognized as a site of resistance, in a poignant performance that honours and gives voice to the dead.
