Conversations about art and ecology

Bénédicte Ramade, an art historian and lecturer at the Université de Montréal, will speak with various curators, artists and scientists in this series of discussions debuting this fall. The participants will share their different perspectives on environmental issues such as eco-anxiety, the sixth (animal) extinction, climate change and plant intelligence.

In these troubled times of climate crisis and rampant environmental changes, eco-anxiety is on the rise and now affects a significant proportion of the public. How are artists dealing with this factor? Between amplification of the phenomenon and the desire to create works that are more constructive than harrowing, this discussion—revolving around the latest projects of Jessica Houston and drawing on the expertise of Karine St-Jean—will attempt to consider some avenues and explore the place and role of art in eco-anxiety discourse.

Karine St-Jean is a psychologist and mindfulness teacher at Mindspace.

Jessica Houston is an artist whose work examines the interlinkage of nature and culture in polar regions. A native of New York, she lives and works in Montreal.
