This work highlights the tensions between Indigenous and Western visions of territory found in the canons of the landscape representations of interrelated worlds. The Indigenous artist Lets’lo:tseltun – Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun is actively engaged in environmental issues. Here, he refers to forest fires, deforestation caused by oil pipeline projects and epistemological, aesthetic and relational conceptions of the Indigenous world.
Yuxweluptun holds a Bachelor’s in Painting from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, in Vancouver. In a formal language that is uniquely his own, he integrates Northwest Coast Indigenous motifs with Surrealist treatments of natural and industrial elements. His work has been the subject of numerous solo and group exhibitions across Canada and abroad.
