This triptych by Renée Condo was inspired by a beaded basket made by a Nimipuutímt (Nez Percé) person from the nineteenth century, a time when various First Nations incorporated spirituality, medicine and other important cultural subjects through plant and stellar motifs to ensure that their Indigenous knowledges survived the repression of colonizing states. Lluigneg expresses the Mi’gmaq concepts of Mntu (energy or spirit) and knowledge of the heart (the obligation to follow the fundamental principle of empathic love) in revitalizing Indigenous knowledge, as well as the artist’s interest in wave-particle duality, entanglement, superposition and their connection to the Mi’gmaq universe.
A visual artist from the Mi’gmaq community of Gesgapegiag, Renée Condo holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art and a Master’s in Sculpture from Concordia University. She has participated in several group exhibitions, including Révélations, Biennale internationale métiers d’art et création in 2023 and recent editions of the Biennale d’art contemporain autochtone, as well as in a number of solo exhibitions since 2021. Condo is part of the 2023-2026 cohort of the Darling Foundary’s emerging artist residency program, Montreal Studios.
