Activities

Arts education: communicating an idea
15 minutes
Explore how graphic representation can change the meaning of words. Start by asking students to write down a word while playing with its shape to suit the message to be conveyed. For example, the word “friend” could be written with dots and then with curves. Or the word “school” in different colours and then all in black. Then reflect on how these differences affect our perception of the word.

To delve further into this topic

Admire the work The Lute Player by artist Shary Boyle, whose themes are similar to those explored by Wieland (feminism, social engagement, experimentation).
