Our Very Own Museum

How does a museum work? In this activity, students will get a behind-the-scenes look at the MMFA and all the professions that make it tick. They will also get to admire works in various collections and experiment with creating an exhibit.

10 to 15 min
Let’s Play Tourist On a map, have students figure out a route from their school to the Museum as well as identify the neighbourhood where the MMFA is located and its main attractions.

5 to 10 min
The Art Association of Montreal – the former name of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts – was founded in 1860. Its first building on Sherbrooke Street, which is now called the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion, was erected in 1912. Together, think about what has changed downtown since that time. Refer to this work by James Wilson Morrice, which depicts the property that was replaced by the pavilion.

Planning your visit

Group entrance

The group entrance is located at 2075 Bishop Street. Plan on arriving 30 minutes before the time scheduled for your visit.

School bus

If you are coming by school bus, allow extra time for potential traffic congestion.

Métro station

The Museum is a 5-minute walk from the Guy-Concordia Métro station (Guy exit).

Allow sufficient time

Allow approximately 30 minutes for students to be greeted at the entrance, to go to the cloakroom and washroom, and to be divided into groups.

Subgroups

To facilitate movement through the galleries and ensure that everyone gets a good view of the works, each class will be divided into two subgroups composed of a maximum of 15 students (11 for preschool groups). The class will regroup afterward in the workshop, if applicable.

Prohibited items

Backpacks, food, beverages and umbrellas are not permitted in the galleries.
