Sexism as the norm is a thing of the past
Nathalie Bondil, Director General and Chief Curator of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts
Rape. Sexual assault. Harassment. Inappropriate behaviour. On the scale of violence, that perpetrated against women in particular, is, here as elsewhere. too frequent. These expressions describe very different legal realities but a single social conscience: zero tolerance. If condemnation is in a judge’s power, every citizen has the power to reject all of these behaviours.
As a woman, in my professional life I have known – and still encounter– misogyny, machismo and childish behaviour, although I cannot forget all the men and women who have supported me then and continue to do so.
As a museum director I reacted online to the open letter against harassment published on November 3 entitled “Not surprised”, signed by 7,000 women in contemporary art: “We call on art institutions, government cultural authorities and all our colleagues to address this issue.”
