The year 2019 was a ringing success for the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA), as exemplified by its annual ranking in the prestigious international publication The Art Newspaper. With 1,174,000 visitors, the MMFA placed 60th worldwide, 2nd in Canada and 11th in North America.
Produced annually, the Art’s Most Popular: exhibition and museum visitor figures rating presents the visitation statistics of all the major museums around the world.
A head-turning, crowd-drawing exhibition
Like moths to a flame, Thierry Mugler: Couturissime (March 2 to September 8, 2019) attracted 290,455 visitors, making it the most seen exhibition in Canada. Another feat, it became the 9th most popular exhibition internationally in the Decorative Arts and Fashion category. Couturissime, currently on its European tour, drew 175,000 visitors this winter at the Kunsthal Rotterdam. It will soon be presented at the Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung in Munich, followed by a final showing at Paris’s Musée des Arts Décoratifs in 2021.
The MMFA remains the most popular tourist attraction in Quebec.
