Quebec and Canadian Art

Fascinated by the geomorphology of the Canadian landscape, Arthur Lismer developed a concept of pictorial space similar to that in Cézanne's paintings. Painted in the studio from sketches made from nature during a summer visit to the area around Lake Moraine and Lake O’Hara in the Rocky Mountains, Cathedral Mountain shows this influence in its arrangement of planes, irregular volumes and distinct outlines.
