Quebec and Canadian Art

Trained by artists in the circle of photographer William Notman, Sandham made his first oil on canvas paintings in 1868. Evening on the Wharf returns to a subject he had already treated in watercolour. Filled with anecdotal details typifying the period’s interest in the picturesque, this colourful canvas depicts the activity at Montreal’s fast growing harbour.
