Gilles Mihalcean has been exploring the poetic value of raw and ready-made materials since 1969. Through juxtaposition he creates metaphors in which invention and humour coexist within a conflictual harmony.
This carved wood Self-portrait of God is reminiscent of children’s sets of blocks. The volume of the blocks and their arrangement in a monolithic form, as well as the title of the work, constitute a kind of puzzle, a simultaneous allusion to childhood, creation and lineage.
