Made with organic materials, the vase No. 2 is from Maurizio Montalti’s "Growing Lab" series. Montalti’s ongoing design research project seeks “to transform our consumption-oriented economic system into an eco-friendly and self-sustaining society, capable of minimizing energy consumption, carbon emissions and the production of waste, while reducing production costs.” Using mycelium, the fast-growing, vegetative part of fungi, as a material to replace toxic synthetic compounds such as plastic in architectural and design applications offers an effective way to help protect the environment. Grown on natural, organic substrates and compostable, such materials can re-enter natural cycles and become nutrients for new life.
